District Leadership in Community Schooling: The Work of Middle-Level Managers (Poster 36)

Abstract

Community schools make the lives of students and families a central concern of educators. Much of the literature on them focuses on the role of principals or community school coordinators for strong implementation. As more districts adopt this as school improvement strategy, research is needed to illustrate how district staff can support this work. Using interviews with district staff in a large urban school district, this study examines how central office district managers and staff support and strengthen the implementation of community school reforms initiatives in their schools. The data illustrate how district staff engage in district level leadership and direct facilitation with school coordinators, serving as a key bridge between district and school leadership.
