Toward Broader Conceptions of Educational Carcerality: Fomenting the Study of Educational Abolitionism in the School Space

Abstract

There is no shortage of documentation regarding the intimate relations between schools and prisons, either through the deployment of metaphor (school-to-prison pipeline or STPP) or expansive descriptions of carceral logics in schools. In this paper, I extend my initial conception of educational carcerality rooted in racialized carceral-colonial logics and technologies across educational geographies. I deploy the analytical heuristic of ‘educational abolitionism’ and invite education scholars towards the (im)possibilities we must grapple with and are afforded through an abolitionist orientation in the school space.
