The Role and Relevancy of Latino Parent Support in the Success of First-Generation Latina Undergraduates

Abstract

In recent years, the influence that Latino parents have on the persistence intentions of Latino/a students has been increasingly explored. However, the majority of this research has not sought to produce a comprehensive understanding of the various forms in which parent support can be expressed and the relevancy of those supports. Thus, the purpose of this study was to obtain a rich understanding of the various ways Latina students believe that parents can express their support during their pursuit of a degree. Findings from 26 interviews with first-generation Latina undergraduates provide insight as to the value of parental support within highly individualistic educational settings in order to illuminate how Latino parents can be powerful facilitators of their children’s postsecondary success.
