Improving College and Career Readiness in the Post-COVID Era: A Case Study in Rural School (Poster 6)

Sun, April 16, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

This study examines the impact of the College and Career Readiness (CCR, a pseudonym) program− designed to increase postsecondary college-going enrollment and STEM interests, particularly for low-income and Minority students. The CCR research team recently employed a mobile app to deliver career and college readiness information, particularly in post-COVID contexts. Utilizing a mixed-method approach, the CCR team deeply understood how rural high schoolers and school counselors sought postsecondary, career, and job information. Preliminary results underscore the need for an intervention program for underserved high school students in rural populations, including the curation of information channels guiding students’ career choices, understanding preparation of a college enrollment decision, and the distinct cultural norms that drive what readiness means for rural high schoolers.
