Starting With Schools: Exploring School-Based Trauma and Its Effects in Black Elementary Youth

Abstract

Much of the research and practice related to trauma and trauma-informed education see schools as safe spaces. However, for Black youth and their families, schools are sites of trauma. Drawing on Critical Race Theory and Systemically Trauma-Informed Practice, this qualitative study explores the realities of school-based trauma and its effects on Black elementary youth, coupled with an investigation of the individual and community-level strengths employed to traverse school-based trauma. Findings situate school-based trauma within racist and unjust systems to interrogate the role of educational institutions in causing harm for Black youth to illuminate a path forward towards enacting liberatory truama-informed education.
