Nourishing STEM Identities: Black Students' Access to Postsecondary STEM Education

Fri, April 14, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Huron

Abstract

This critical case study indicates the factors that impact access to STEM post-secondary fields through transitional, bridging, and access education programs by Black students in Canada. Using a Critical Race Theory framework, eleven interviews were completed with Black students and counterstories were co-constructed. The salient themes that emerged are notably all outside the structure of the educational institution alone – indicating that access programming must encompass a wraparound community approach when supporting Black students and access.
