This paper focuses an ongoing collaborative storytelling project with high school-aged Black youth working at a community farm rooted in African Diasporic food and farming traditions. Highlighting the creative and critical literacy practices one intern exhibits as they engage in a collaborative screenwriting project, the paper analyzes how this youth connects storytelling rooted in culture and history to themes of food and environmental justice. The paper explores the methodological and pedagogical affordances of engaging young people in creative, speculative, and imaginative storytelling around issues of climate and environment justice in order to promote more responsive and responsible environmental education that improves young people’s sense of self-efficacy in bringing about a better future.
