K–12 School Discipline and the Racialized and Gendered Vulnerabilities of Black Boys

Abstract

Although various scholars have theorized the treatment of Black boys in schools through lenses of race, antiblackness, and criminalization, these frameworks fail to capture the specificity of Black boys’ racialized and gendered vulnerabilities. In contrast to this previous literature, I employ anti-Black misandry as a theoretical framework to position Black boys as racialized and gendered subjects to: 1) Support the development of empirically informed theories that capture Black boys’ marginalized masculinities and disproportionate punishment in schools and 2) Provide discursive room to advance more precise strategies to intervene in the disposability of Black boys in schools.
