Abstract

Increasing efforts have recently focused on helping students develop individual study strategy skills, while these efforts have been effective at improving students’ learning outcomes, there is comparatively less emphasis on promoting students’ use of collaborative study strategies. This study explores the impact of a brief instructional module designed to support undergraduate biology students’ effective use of collaborative study groups. Students who were randomly assigned to the collaborative study strategy intervention condition reported using collaborative study strategies more than those in the comparison condition. Post-test exam scores were positively correlated with some measures of collaborative study strategy use. Limited evidence suggests that the brief module may be associated with greater use of collaborative study strategies and exam scores.
