Abstract

Grounded in critical race theory, this study explores the experiences of BIPOC faculty, staff, and administrators with racial diversity leadership and describes the impact of these experiences on retention. Participants reported experiences with covert and overt marginalization as well as the burden of invisible labor, perpetuated by the centering of whiteness. Additionally, participants also experienced positive experiences with leaders who fostered an environment of acceptance and belonging, recognized injustices, provided opportunities for growth, and truly exhibited a commitment to advancing equity – beyond performative gestures.
