Building an Inclusive and Accessible Informal STEM Learning Space for Deaf Students

Abstract

Research is needed to position deaf students at the forefront of research on teaching and learning, especially in an informal learning environment. In this case, there is a need to provide language access to scientific information for deaf students outside of school to support their formal science education. This paper will the role of science camp to explore the sociocultural perspective on STEM learning for deaf students in an informal science learning environment. The emerging theme of deaf students in inclusive and accessible STEM learning environments included language representation, cultural role models, and recognition of self. The findings also emphasize the importance of designing an equitable learning experience for marginalized students in informal science education.
