Examining MathTok as a Space for Learning

Abstract

One of many subcommunities present on TikTok is the MathTok community. MathTok is a community of TikTok users who create, promote, and share videos specifically in relation to mathematics. These videos serve a multitude of purposes such as teaching, learning, and sharing common mathematics experiences with a comedic flare. The purpose of this paper is to bring awareness and acknowledgment to TikTok as an out-of-school learning space. To meet this objective, MathTok videos were collected and coded for their mathematics content, genre, and instructional approaches presented in each video. To better understand MathTok as an out-of-school learning space the Connected Learning framework is used to highlight how MathTok is presents itself as a learning space.
