Is the Die Cast? Investigating How Opportunity Remains a Myth for Many of Today's Learners (Poster 37)

Thu, April 13, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

Educational opportunity has been a decades-long focus as we address the potential for school and post-secondary success for historically marginalized students (Darling-Hammond, 2004). Scholars call for shifting our perspective, moving beyond analysis to action. Ladson-Billings (2006) suggests a move beyond “gap-gazing” and Nasir et al. (2021) challenges long-held epistemologies through which we view the purpose of learning. Given opportunity still remains elusive for students that sit at the intersections of marginalized identities within race, class, and gender conceptualizations, this is required. Using a latent profile and latent transition analyses, we explore why a shift to a longitudinal lens with opportunity is critical in order to afford the best experiences for our youngest learners in today's schools.
