This exploration of the advanced racial literacy stances of Chicana/o/x Ethnic Studies teachers was undertaken through a critical qualitative ethnographic approach. This inquiry focuses on the experiences and narratives of two self-identified Chicanx teachers to examine (1) what shaped the development of their own racial literacies and (2) to examine how their pedagogical approaches cultivated their students’ critical awareness of racial inequity. Data were collected via weekly participant observations, individual interviews and analysis of relevant documents. By exploring how ES teachers embody and embed anti-racist approaches in their pedagogies, this study contributes to empirical understanding of ES pedagogies that are critical, humanizing and race-conscious.
