Abstract

Universities in the US have become increasingly international and multilingual over the last 60 years thanks to international students; nonetheless, previous research tends to focus on policies and strategies to “recruit” international students rather than giving close attention to their unique, individual viewpoints.

This study examines U.S. colleges of education international graduate students’ academic identities by exploring their experiences and perceptions in a higher education setting. The findings show that students construct academic identities in a variety of ways and their identities have a close relationship with their academic environments. Providing a welcoming and open-minded environment for international students and having more conversations and communications between students and faculty can be key to their successful academic achievements.
