Fri, May 5, 11:30am to 1:00pm CDT (11:30am to 1:00pm CDT), Division I Virtual Sessions, Division I - Education in the Professions Virtual Roundtable Room

Abstract

In 2017, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada transitioned post-graduate programs from time-based to competency-based, demanding adaptation throughout the educational system. This study examines whether residents perceive transformative change has occurred. Interview transcripts were analyzed for evidence of change. Quotes relating to the tensions were categorized according to fixed/growth mindset and behaviour, using the iceberg model. While we found that transformation was still in progress, the study showed that parts of the system remain in conflict, e.g., the work required for signoffs overshadowed the desire for quality feedback. Our study highlights that implementation of educational innovations, such as this paradigm shift to mastery learning, requires new mindsets and behaviours.
