Inclusive Civic Education and School Democracy: Bounded Case Studies of School Participatory Budgeting

Abstract

Traditional civic education and approaches to school democracy have not always been inclusive, with many perpetuating the civic opportunity gap. To this end, we explore a bounded case study of schools implementing Inclusive School Participatory Budgeting, a process wherein students decide how to spend a portion of the school budget. The findings from the pilots indicate that the ISPB model has great potential for engaging all students more fully in civic life and provides valuable lessons for other school programs that intend to offer inclusive and equitable civic learning opportunities.
