Inclusion of Students With Disabilities in an Urban School: Analysis Through Ableism and Critical Disability Studies

Abstract

The study explored the utility of creativity and culturally relevant educational practice to improve equity and inclusion of culturally diverse children with disabilities in an underperforming inclusive urban school. Within this schooling environment, administrators and teachers collaborated to create a learning community for students who are culturally and racially diverse, so they are educated in ways that value their differences and distinctive capabilities. The frameworks of critical disability studies and ableism illuminated inequities and injustices inherent in schools. Discussed are implications for policy, research, and practice.
