Parable Pedagogy: Fostering Environments for Black Girl World-Making

Abstract

This presentation argues that Black girls must be centered in education and plans for (re)imagining the world. Their recommendations for designed otherwise worlds and ways of learning are frequently unacknowledged. In response, I created a literacy-based program for Black girls to employ their liberatory literacies to “architext” educational youthtopias. Employed autoethonographic methods, I discussed the ways in which the Parable of the Sower served as my Northstar during the facilitating of the program. As such, this qualitative study asks: What pedagogical lessons can Black girl practitioners learn from facilitating dream spaces for Black girls? Data sources include autoethographic field notes and journal entries; analyzed through Black Girl Cartography (Butler, 2018).
