Abstract

Though many researchers have documented how learners' experiences are racialized in mathematics classrooms and the pervasiveness of deficit views, there are few studies examining secondary mathematics teachers’ racialized beliefs. We have little research evidence about secondary mathematics teachers’ views about minoritized learners and how these beliefs shape their classroom organization, teaching practices, and classroom interactions. To this end, we designed and piloted the first national, large-scale survey for U.S.-based secondary mathematics teachers’ racialized beliefs. We share findings from our pilot study of the survey based on a sample of teachers from across the United States (N = 227). We share findings related to teachers’: 1) endorsement of deficit views; 2) beliefs about teaching mathematics; and 3) inclusive teaching practices.
