This paper will explore archiving the narratives of three of Black women art educators as it relates to countering the underrepresentation of Black women within the history of art education. Utilizing qualitative methods of phenomenology and life history and the arts-based methods of portraiture and video, this project shifts authority to the participants to articulate what is valuable and worthy to be known. Through the lens of Black feminisms, I share how the participants make sense of themselves as Black women art educators, highlighting their self-definitions (versions of truth) through the varied descriptions of their racial, gendered, and career-related experiences. The documentation of these narratives via video present an alternate mode of research presentation for the history of art education.
