Teacher Adaptivity and Instructional Change: Challenge, Learning, and Change in the Wake of Pandemic Teaching

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic created an unprecedented situation where teaching conditions changed both suddenly and drastically, requiring teachers to adapt to virtual teaching overnight. However, it is often difficult for teachers to let go of old behaviors and change their teaching practices. One potential positive outcome of the pandemic is that it led teachers to develop adaptive expertise. This paper examines to what extent the experience of teaching remotely pushed teachers to adopt the practices of adaptive experts by perceiving the challenges of a novel situation, engaging in new learning, and changing their practices in response. We also classify the types of challenges, learnings, and changes that teachers reported.
