Abstract

In response to national and global autonomy trends, researchers have tried to unpack autonomy and demonstrate evidence of how it affects educational systems. The findings and positions researchers take towards autonomy are quite contradictory. By critically analyzing 85 systematically selected empirical and conceptual studies, this paper aims to unpack the complexities and variations in the effects and implications of teacher autonomy for teachers and students.
