PhD studies have attracted the interest of students due to various personal and professional benefits. However, attrition among PhD students is high. Using the constructs of Self-Determination Theory as a lens, this case study aims to examine the experiences of nine PhD students of having their three psychological needs satisfied by their university as they navigated through the terrain of graduate studies. Study participants narrated they were able to cope well with their PhD studies because they were given a need-supportive environment for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Once these three psychological needs are satisfied by their university, PhD students can be determined to succeed in their endeavors as practitioners and researchers.
