Black History Through Community Based Education

Abstract

A movement to include Black history in curricula peaked during the summer of 2020, coinciding with broader calls for racial justice in the US. These movements in part led to the “anti-CRT” legislation proposed in several states. This paper examines alternative models to incorporating Black history in the formal school curriculum – especially how Community-Based Educational Spaces contribute to this mission. The Justice Center for Urban Leadership and Education is an example of a community based space that seeks to combine grass roots activism, social justice work and adult and child educational opportunities. By designing educational programming for youth and adults around Black history, they provide a blueprint for addressing the dearth of educational resources around Black History in their community.
