"We Used to Be, Learn, Teach Like This": Narratives of a Teacher About Outdoor Learning Practices

Sun, April 16, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Lobby - Level 3, Streeterville

Abstract

In this work I strive to learn from an educator, retired kindergarten teacher and school headmaster, about the practices they used to employ both as children and as educators almost half a century ago. As I am focusing more on outdoor learning practices my main interest is to turn to three modes of outdoor activities: unobserved children outdoor play, organised outdoor learning activities connected to particular subject matters, and child-led activities and play elevated by an adult’s presence and engagement and guidance thereafter. I am employing biographical narrative methods and oral history methods for this work. This is the first biographical interview of many that will be realised within this series of interviews.
