What Does It Mean to Be Smart in Mathematics at Community Colleges? An Investigation of the Culture of Mathematics Classrooms in Community Colleges From Students' Perspectives

Abstract

This paper focuses on the ways in which a community construct smartness in their mathematical classroom from students' perspective. The study focuses on the following research questions: How do students at SWC define smartness in math?
How do students perpetuate and/or disrupt dominant narratives surrounding smartness in math class at SWC?
We answer these questions by using surveys and interviews to better understand the phenomenon.
