We used Gutierrez’s (2012) definition of equity (access, achievement, identity, and power) to examine to what extent aspiring principals engage in equity-oriented work and what factors shape their engagement. Using a case study design, we interviewed 17 principal interns enrolled in two different programs at one large university across three semesters. We found that the interns engaged most with achievement equity work, then access, identity, and, finally, power. The bulk of interns’ engagement can be characterized awareness of equity issues, though they were more likely to lead than observe or participate in equity work. We found two factors shaped interns’ engagement: their role in their school and their coursework. We conclude with implications for research and practice.
