Parental Involvement in the NCAA's Mandated Screening for Sickle Cell Trait

Sun, April 16, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

The NCAA requires college athletes to receive sickle cell trait (SCT) screening or sign a liability waiver prior to participation. Most engage with this policy as they are transitioning into making health decisions as an adult. Some may consult with their parents, while others decide independently. Over 1,400 athletes from 75 schools completed surveys about whether parents should be involved in screening and if their own were involved. Analyses revealed that most athletes reported receiving parental assistance, even when they decided to opt out. Black athletes and D-I athletes were more likely to believe parents should be, but their own were not involved in screening. Universities should implement policies allowing either support or independence from parents when making this decision.
