The purpose of this presentation is to problematize the practice of traditional home visiting and to share the practice of relationship-building, asset-framed home visits by elementary teachers. These visits, paired with significant training for the teachers, provide opportunities for teachers to learn from and about families in families’ own spaces. We situate home visits within Mapp and Bergman’s (2021) “More Liberatory Approach to Family Engagement” as one of an array of spaces and strategies for building authentic collaborations between educators and families. Our focus is on nondominant families since those are the families whose voices and cultural models often are not visible in school-based practices or elementary teacher preparation in the U.S. (Ladson-Billings, 2014).
