Teacher Leadership Through Community Engagement in STEM

Abstract

Results from study of self-reflections of volunteering pre-service teachers in a teacher leadership development project through academic service learning in STEM education in a museum will be presented. Student volunteers participated in service learning community activities through a science museum, developed engaging science lesson and presented at local schools. Each participant reflected upon his/her experience in terms of five prompts. Analysis of responses to prompts by themes; self-efficacy development, depth of understanding of the topic, audience STEM learning, and sense of self-responsibility. Results indicated emerging themes predominantly in the areas of development of self-confidence and depth of understanding of the topic, audience STEM learning and sense of self-responsibility. Implications for teacher preparation and leadership will be discussed.
