Abstract

This study explores the role of educator mindsets to foster deeper learning environments within Study for Deeper Learning (SDL) participating high schools. Previous work on teacher mindsets and professional learning have underestimated the network of beliefs that comprise educator mindsets and integrate content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, and dispositions within mindsets. Furthermore, the role of collective educator mindsets and the mindset ecosystem within schools has yet to be explored in depth. Using a mixed methods design prioritizing situational analysis, this poster shares an emerging theory of the role of educator mindsets to shape motivation and professional commitment within educator professional learning communities. The results of the first phase of this exploratory sequential mixed methods design will be shared. Qualitative analysis of educator interviews and focus groups, student focus groups, administrator interviews, and network school case reports totaling 191 transcripts were coded in three waves and the initial situational map was developed. Agreement between two trained coders is currently 98% with a Kappa statistic of κ =0.83 which is determined to be strong agreement. Three highest frequency codes are school theme characteristics with 36% coverage, school-level administrator roles and responsibilities with 19% coverage, and family and community involvement with 15% coverage. Emerging themes include the distinction between individual and shared beliefs for educators within deeper learning networks, the critical importance of the school leader in establishing a collective mindset toward ongoing professional learning, and the alignment of mindset with school theme or values. Implications will be discussed.
