"It's Time for Black Teachers to Start Thriving": The Impact of Black Teacher Fugitive Space (Poster 49)

Abstract

In an era where teacher shortages have become a growing concern, Black teachers are leaving the classroom at disproportionate rates. In addition to the typical stressors of the profession, Black teachers have to navigate antiblackness in their school sites and professional development contexts. Through an ethnographic examination of a Black teacher affinity space, I use participant observation, interviews, and go alongs to explore the ways that Black teachers co-create spaces that inform their pedagogies and resistance to antiblackness at their school sites. My research employs notions of educational fugitivity from Black Studies to theorize how these Black-affirming spaces are rehumanizing and sustaining for Black teachers, offering practical implications for Black teacher retention, Black teacher pedagogies, and Black teacher thriving.
