Mid-South Educational Research Association: Identification of Executive Function Deficits in Students With Emotional Behavioral Disorders

Abstract

This study investigated differences in performance on EF skills assessments between students with EBD and typical students, to determine differences in performance in tests of hot and cool EF skills, and to determine whether student characteristics (e.g. SES, age, cognitive ability) are related to EF performance. Results fill in critical gaps in knowledge about EF skills performance in students with EBD as compared to typically developing, age- and gender-matched peers and illuminates the need for additional research in this area. This study also provides fundamental knowledge relative to EF skills and perceived EF deficits in students with EBD and provides a basis for investigating the potential of EF-based interventions to improve executive skills and self-regulatory outcomes for students with EBD.
