Black Mothers' Practices and Child Advocacy During Shelter-in-Place

Abstract

The requirements for distance learning during shelter-in-place, became challenging for Black mothers, in the midst of syndemic forces. A “syndemic,” which two or more epidemics interacting to create an additional burden of disease on a specific population. (Fishbein, 2020). The researchers employ Critical Race Theory (CRT) to examine how Black women have attempted to meet school district demands and maintain healthy home and academic lives for their children. To examine the intersections of race, class and gender regarding Black working mothers, the researchers rely on Crenshaw’s concept of ‘structural intersectionality,’ which focuses on the institutional subordination of women due to enforced gendered roles in schools and the workplace.
