Investigating the Barriers to Introducing Artificial Intelligence Education for Elementary School Teachers in South Korea

Abstract

As technology advances, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used in various fields. Following this trend, South Korea is preparing to introduce AI education into the national curriculum at all school levels by 2025. However, a full understanding of the barriers that South Korean teachers may encounter while preparing for AI education implementation is needed. Based on Ertmer's framework, this study will determine whether teachers have first or second-order barriers, and what new barriers, if any, they encounter. The findings will have important implications for researchers with an interest in AI education by identifying the barriers for elementary school teachers who are working in the selected schools, offering insight and reference for future progress in AI education.
