Abstract

"Visible Thinking approach and its thinking routines (TRs) and thinking moves (TMs) have been applied in different subject matters. However, misalignments were found among course goals, TMs, TRs, and assessment in previous research. To address these issues, the researchers designed a college-level EFL Movie English course by 1) selecting four TRs; 2) translating TMs into course-specific goals; 3) selecting TRs that match the goals; and 4) designing TMs assessment rubric. We asked in what way TRs and TMs-incorporated curriculum affected students' movie analysis performance. Students' self-evaluation and analysis writing were collected in the beginning and end of semester for comparison. Data analysis results shows improvements in four of the TMs, among which considering different viewpoints and perspectives improved the most. Further research may be needed to consider other thinking moves and research for longer terms to see more effects.
Key words: thinking education, visible thinking, thinking moves, thinking routines"
