Exploring Teachers' Lived Literacies: Disrupting Hegemonic Conceptions of Literacy in Schools

Abstract

This in-progress study is grounded in a poststructural feminist approach to New Literacies. Drawing on Lawrence-Lightfoot's (1997) use of portraiture, I aimed to center the voices of three participants as we examined the origins of their conceptions of literacy and the ways in which their personal literacy practices may cross the boundary into their classrooms. The participants' willingness to share their life stories, examples of their creative works, their teaching, and their classrooms with me has offered the opportunity to examine the limitations of school-based literacies and the richness of the literacy practices we can engage in both within and beyond the walls of our classrooms.
