The purpose of this study is to explore how youth participating in sport respond to literary narratives about the body (e.g., picturebooks); analyze/question texts through critical literacy and embodiment lenses, and engage in designing interactions with those texts. One central research question this study will focus on is: How do children participating in after school sport programs respond to narratives about the body (and about sport) as they participate in designing interactions with those texts? In pursuing these questions, youth will engage in reading and discussing stories about the body and about sport while participating in a school-based sports program. This 6-month study will take place at one school's site of Girls on the Run (GOTR), a nationally recognized nonprofit organization, and a counterpart created by the teacher who runs GOTR, called Dudes on the Move (DOTM). We will explore fiction written for young and middle grade readers.
