Abstract

This doctoral research-in-progress, fully funded by the University of Surrey, UK, for the period 01/2022-03/2025, is currently in the eve of its data collection stage. Thanks to the 2-year long careful planning of a complete research proposal submitted to get funding, during the first year, the research problem has firmly been established, in-depth and critical literature review, which informed theoretical framework and research questions of the project, has been conducted, most suitable methodological framework including ontological and epistemological issues, research design (methods, recruitment strategies and sampling) and modes data analysis have been set. Currently detailed interview protocol is being prepared; participant recruitment posters and emails to UK and USA universities' International Offices are being sent out. Between March-April 2023, pilot interviews with Uzbek students studying in the UK and USA, 2 participants per country, and with 2 returnees in Uzbekistan will be conducted. Therefore, sharing this work-in-progress with the most relevant academic auditorium - US higher education institutes' representatives who may have better understanding of mechanisms and conditions their universities offer for (international) students to shape their political thinking is particularly timely and hugely beneficial for my research before embarking on actual data collection stage. I intend to share the impact of AERA2023 R-in-P roundtable discussion on my research progress, interview protocol refinement, in particular, along with my findings in AERA2024 Annual Meeting. The full account of my doctoral research's findings will be disseminated in AERA2025.
