Get Ready to Be Confused: Understanding the Effects of Racialization on African International Students' Identity

Sat, April 15, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower- Ballroom Level, Grand Ballroom A

Abstract

This proposal focuses on the racialization of international Black African collegians (IBAC) and the effects it has on their identity. I specifically look at how IBAC came to understand the idea of "intercentricity", namely that US society is stratified by race first. I argue that IBAC are pre-socialized to race and Blackness in unique ways before arriving to the US and their racial identity formation follows a different trajectory than Black US Americans (BUSA). Five themes are presented in addition to implications for the field of higher education.
