How Is Student Motivation Related to the Reading Curriculum Used in Tutoring?

Abstract

When students struggle while learning to read, engaging them in a text can be difficult. The present study sought to investigate how participating in a tutoring program that uses an innovative literacy curriculum (vs. a traditional curriculum) affects student engagement for a population of first graders labeled struggling readers. The results of this initial analyses indicated that use of the Friends on the Block Curriculum in tutoring for students at risk for reading failure leads to increased student engagement regardless of prior literary skills, dosage of intervention, and assigned instructor.
