Abstract

Retrieval practice has been consistently documented to be an effective yet underutilized strategy among college students. In a pre-registered experiment (AsPredicted #109088), we aim to test the effectiveness of a utility value intervention on students' engagement in retrieval practice during a chemistry-learning task. We predict specifically that: 1) Compared to a control condition, participants who receive a utility value intervention will be more likely to choose retrieval practice over restudy to review learning materials. 2) Compared to a control condition, participants who receive a utility value intervention will report more perceived utility value of using retrieval practice in their learning. Data collection started in Oct, 2022 and will continue throughout the Spring 2023 semester.
