Examining First-Generation College Students' Experience of Career Counseling: A Qualitative Method

Abstract

While research has focused extensively on college students' career decisions, first generation college students' experiences have minimally been examined. This study will add to the current literature by gaining the knowledge and understanding of the population and enlightening career counselors tasked with assisting this population as to how to counsel them in effective and culturally sensitive ways. Specifically, the present study will examine what first generation college students expect from career counselors and how they feel about the guidance they receive from career counselors if they have been to counseling. A qualitative research method will be conducted in order to address the following research questions: 1) what do first-generation college students expect from career counselors? and 2) how do first-generation college students feel about the guidance they receive from career counselors?
