Mapping the History of the Prison-School Nexus in Minneapolis

Abstract

This paper attempts to historicize the prison-school nexus through a case study investigating the Minneapolis Public Schools. This research looks first to the historic partnership between the Minneapolis Public Schools and Minneapolis Police Department. This partnership concluded shortly after the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police in 2020. In an effort to better address contemporary inequities in educational opportunity and disciplinary practices, this paper aims at offering historical background to contemporary debates about the role of police in schools.
