Abstract

Looking at the disparities in academic achievement among Asian American subgroups is a way of dismantling the rhetoric of the model minority stereotype, decentering Whiteness, resisting antiblackness, and helping all racial/ethnic minorities unite against the dominant institutions and structures of power. Highlighting such differences requires a closer look at the Asian American students using disaggregateddata. In this study,we use ECLS-K: 2011 data, which is a large, nationally representative survey that disaggregates Asian American children into eight Asian subgroups. Our research will go beyond simply demonstrating that Asian American students are a heterogeneous population with significant differences in academic achievement among subgroups. This study will investigate and build upon descriptive statistical analysis to help researchers better understand patterns across groups and subgroups and help inform policies that will provide more equitable educational opportunities for all children.
