Data Science Curriculum for Preservice Secondary Mathematics Teachers (Poster 49)

Abstract

The goal of this project is to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a 6-week data science module for preservice secondary mathematics teachers. We have developed a series of lessons to support future high school mathematics teachers’ learning of data science concepts. These lessons are being implemented in two Midwest Universities. Pre-and post-tests will be used to assess approximately 20 preservice mathematics teachers’ learning of data science concepts as well as the knowledge needed to teach data science concepts to their future students. Short assignments will also be collected throughout the semester. The instructors of the courses where these materials will be implemented will also record several lessons to assess the instructor’s implementation of the module and class discussions. Dependent samples t-test will be used to analyze the pre-and post-test data to determine the extent of the preservice teachers’ learning. Qualitative data analysis will be used to analyze the video recordings and short assignments in support of the quantitative data. The next steps for this research are to continue teaching the modules and collect data using the techniques mentioned previously. We anticipate the results will show improvement in preservice teachers’ understanding of data science concepts as well as the improvement in understanding needed to teach data science concepts to their future students. We hope the results of this study will help us to further develop these materials based on current and future high school teacher needs.
