Abstract

As online learning grows, additional research into the needs of online students is necessary. Advances in technology have made online learning possible, but student support services have not kept up. This may be due to a lack of understanding of the intricate needs of online students. The purpose of this narrative inquiry research study is to understand the experiences of online learners in a graduate level history program from the role of the advisor. Students taking online classes are typically adult learners with external obligations that impact their educational path. These duties often necessitate online learning and makes the educational journey complex resulting in high attrition rates. Student support services for online learners, such as properly educated advisors, are needed to increase retention.
