If We Want Censorship, We Can Have It ... but We Don't Want It

Abstract

Initiatives like Georgia’s HB 1084, which prohibits teaching “divisive concepts” like systemic racism, are poised to prevent the accurate teaching of United States history and to give politicians and a small pro-censorship minority the power to prevent discussions of race in a state that still features structures that were built by humans enslaved because of their race. In this paper, we address results of a poll of Georgia educators’ and families’ responses to attempts to increase educational censorship in the state. We share takeaways regarding the fear and harm this censorship causes in and out of the classroom.
