Voices From the Field: Insights on the Impact of "Divisive Concepts" Legislation on Public Education

The Discussant’s Commentary will contextualize the results of the live attendee poll within the “voices from the field” survey results presented in paper #4. In September 2020, Donald Trump issued executive Order 13950 which presented a definition of the term, divisive concepts, and argued that education about these “divisive concepts” promoted “division and inefficiency,” threatened “cohesion and effectiveness,” reinforced “biases.” Since then, state legislatures across the nation have introduced bills or passed laws related to divisive concepts.
Latest estimates indicate that 44 states have taken steps to limit instructional content related
racism or sexism in public schools or post-secondary institutions. This paper will provide a high-level summary of data collected from a survey designed to assess the impact of this legislation on educators and scholars involved in the nation’s systems of public education.
